Dante’s Place is a historic site right in the heart of Copenhagen’s Medieval City. It’s a public space that the community wants to preserve for future generations, with tall trees, flowers, gentle hills, benches, sculptures, social activities, outdoor dining, and not least, beautiful architecture. The area is part of the Cultural Quarter, which includes 17 museums and attracts many visitors. There’s also a large school and six childcare institutions that keep the place lively from early morning until late afternoon.
For over six years, residents, local businesses, the neighborhood council, museums, and numerous associations have fought to keep Dante’s Place free from an unnecessary underground parking garage. Despite common sense, thousands of protests, and 6,200 parking spaces within just over a kilometer, the Copenhagen Municipality has still granted Q-Park building permission for it.
Something that means a lot to our city and our shared space here at Dante’s Place is the upcoming plans by Q-Park to build underground parking right here.
On the surface, it might sound like a good idea – more parking spots, less traffic on the streets, and maybe a more organized city. But the truth is, Q-Park’s takeover of Dante’s Place is a threat to the place we know and love.
Dante’s Place isn’t just a parking lot or a spot where cars come and go. It’s a living urban space where people meet, where art and culture can flourish, and where you can feel the city’s heartbeat. When we dig underground to create parking spaces, we risk destroying the character and life that make Dante’s Place special.
Underground parking also means more cars in the area – more cars coming in and out of the garage, which increases traffic congestion and pollution. It goes against our goals for a greener, more sustainable city where pedestrians and cyclists come first, not cars.
We also need to think about what kind of city life we want. Do we want a square where people can meet in peace and quiet, or will we accept it slowly turning into a car corridor?
That’s why it’s important we say no to Q-Park’s plans for underground parking at Dante’s Place. We must protect our public space, preserve the living environment, and make sure Dante’s Place remains a place that brings people together – not cars.
